Connie had been at the kitchen since 4:30 AM, getting breakfast for the rockers ready. There were over 100 meals to make for everyone (counselors included) and Connie wasn't sure she would be able to do it. Her help for the morning hadn't arrived yet (she was an hour late) and Connie was doing her best to stay calm. After all, she was a professional caterer and professional caterers had to be used to these sorts of setbacks. So, Connie continued to cook her breakfast for today and keep her good reputation as it was only her second year cooking for the slightly high society campers, and she couldn't afford any slip ups yet. All the while she kept on thinking to herself that Elissa had better have a good reason to be an hour late. Connie remembered Elissa from the year before since the younger woman had helped her out in the kitchen then too. So she knew that Elissa was hardly ever late for anything she was supposed to be at. That made Connie decided that she was going to take it easy on her this time.
At almost 7 AM Elissa finally walked in and immediately said "Hey Connie, sorry I'm late. I slept in." and it sounded like she really meant it. Connie knew Elissa pretty well, so she believed the sincerity behind her words. She turned around to face the girl, wiping flour off her hands at the same time "Don't worry about it sweetie. Just grab an apron and help me." Connie told her before placing the towel back on the counter and kneading the dough now. She was making the campers an extra special breakfast to distract them from the trouble that Camp Star had caused the night before. Everyone needed something to start the day off with and to put a smile on their faces! Connie knew that if the recipe for her Mama's Fruit Chimichangas didn't work then nothing would. Connie had also decided to make Pineapple Tamale Muffins like her Grandma had taught her when she was a young girl.
The thought of the foods she was preparing reminded her of when Mitchie was a child. There were days that her daughter would come home from school and had had a bad day. The next morning Connie always surprised her with what her Mama would call "cheer foods" all of Connie's childhood and for a while it seemed to help Mitchie feel better. Now her little girl was practically a woman and her problems seemed to go above sweet foods. Bringing her mind back to reality, Connie got the fruit for the Chimichangas ready and asked Elissa "How was your year away from camp Elissa?" at the same time, cutting up a few bananas while she waited for an answer. There seemed to be something different about Elissa but Connie couldn't quite put a finger on it. And because of that she had no idea whether it was a good or bad thing. But Elissa was undoubtedly different compared to the girl she had met a year ago.
